Benedict Taylor is a london based freelance violist, violinist and teacher. He recently returned from Mumbai where he held the position of Director of String Teaching, at the Mehli Mehta Music Foundation.

Pedagogy forms a major part of Benedicts' career. He began studying the art of teaching in detail whilst attending the Royal Northern College of Music, and has continued since, as a point of personal interest and as a professional aid. In particular, his interests in the area of string pedagogy lie in the writings of Leopold Mozart, Carl Flesch, Dr Shinichi Suzuki and Oscar Sevcik. He spends much time studying the art of practise, performance, listening/awareness, ergonomics of playing and the psycology of learning. Studying music at any stage, is of great benefit to many peoples lifestyles, and should always be enjoyable and rewarding.

Since graduating from the Royal Northern College of Music in 2004, alongside working as a specialist teacher, he has worked extensively as a performer in symphony & chamber orchestras, new music ensembles, quartets and duos, throughout the UK, Mainland Europe and Asia. He has performed at international festivals including Cheltenham, Huddersfield, Edinburgh, Manchester, Manchester Jazz Festival, Cantiere Internacionale di Montepulciano and Monte Music Festival - India. During this time he has had the opportunity to work under such conductors as Zubin Mehta, Oliver Von Dohnanyi and Sir Mark Elder.

As a performer, he has studied and taken master-classes with expert musicians including; Roger Bigley, Thomas Riebl, Sylvia Simionescu, Chris Rowland, Milan Skampa, Garfield Jackson, Howard Davies, Paul Stewart, Rodney Slatford.

As a session musician, Benedict has made recordings for labels including EMI, Sony BMG and Sketchbook UK and worked with artists including Cherry Ghost and Micah P. Hinson.

In addition to this experience Benedict works as a  contemporary and traditional folk musician performing in such venues as Islington Folk Club, Cecil Sharpe House and University of London Union, The Britons Protection and The Roadhouse, (Manchester).

Undergraduate study - Royal Northern College of Music

BMus (Hons) RNCM/MAN

Due to enrole to study for an MMus, 09/2008.

Reasons to study with me:

Violin & Viola Playing - Technique, Performance, Sound  Production, Interpretation.

Theory, Musicianship and History - Degree Level Experience.

I work with all standards and age of pupil. I have much experience with the very young, having worked with violinists as a young as 3.

I have experience of tutoring students up the standard of ABRSM diploma level and university performance level.

I often coach youth orchestra sectionals and take ensemble rehearsals. In addition to orchestral coaching, I spend much time tutoring chamber music groups.

I was recently in the position of Director of Strings - Mehli Mehta Music Foundation, Mumbai. This was a residency of one year, during which I was was responsible for string and chamber music tuition and developing the curriculum for the foundation, alongside my performing career.

In addition to this experience, I have worked as a tutor for RNCM Junior Strings, Cumbria Youth Orchestra, Greater Manchester Music Action Zone, Lady Margaret School Parsons Green, Action Space UK.

A particular point of interest in my career is sound production, which I view as one of the fundamentally important elements of playing a bowed instrument. I believe it is of great importance to focus on the skill of producing an excellent sound, whilst learning musicianship and overall technique.
