Jonathan Morris (20) is currently in his third year at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, where he studies with the head of the keyboard department, Ronan O’Hora.
Growing up in south east Ireland, Jonathan received early recognition of his musical talent after going to study in Newtown School, where he became the beneficiary of a musical scholarship that entitled him to free piano lessons while at school. Since then, he has gained recognition from several prominent music institutions including the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin and his current conservatoire, both of which provided him with full scholarships.
Competitions have frequently yielded success for Jonathan. Last year he received third prize in the junior section of the 2011 International Piano Competition in Rome, and more recently won the Huban Cup and Patrick Brennan award of €1,000 in the 2012 Feis Ceoil in Ireland, giving him the opportunity to perform in the main auditorium of Dublin’s National Concert Hall as part of the winner’s concert.
Jonathan has been involved with many major music festivals worldwide, including the Aspen Music Festival and School in Colorado, which he attended for the past three summers with financial help from many generous supporters and the Polonsky Foundation in the UK. His participation in festivals such as this and his involvement in the bustling classical music scene in London has allowed him to receive tuition from some of the finest musicians of this generation, most recently with Peter Donohoe, to whom he played Prokofiev’s virtuosic 3rd Piano Concerto in a Guildhall masterclass in the latter half of November 2012. He has plans to enter into several other competitions over the coming year.
