Biography

Faye Cullen's Biography:

I started playing the violin when I was just 6 years old. My first teacher was Barbara Turpin who after a year suggested that I should audition for a scholarship from the Wiltshire Schools Music Service to allow me to attend one of the primary Saturday schools run by the music conservatoires in London.

I was awarded a scholarship and successfully auditioned at the Primary Academy department of the Royal Academy of Music. I studied violin under Ellen Martin who guided me through to my successful audition to the Junior Academy at the Royal Academy of Music for which I received a scholarship.

In the Junior Academy I initially studied under Nina Martin and later Ben Wragg who coached me to being offered places at a number of the UK senior Conservatoires. I chose to continue to study at the Royal Academy of Music (and was the only Junior Academy violinist to be offered a place that year.) I also became the leader of the Swindon and Wiltshire Youth Orchestra.

At the senior Royal Academy of Music, I initially studied violin under professor Mateja Marinkovic and later professor Igor Petrushevski.

Expertise

Faye Cullen's Expertise

I have been teaching for over 10 years now and also been involved with coaching orchestras, chamber groups and choirs.

I am registered on the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly Criminal Records Bureau) national register and have an Enhanced Certificate working with children as private music teacher from Aug 2013.

I'm based in West Hampstead close to the stations.

I am prepared to travel in central and north London for an additional fee.

I teach all ages and abilities in a hopefully enjoyable and relaxed manner. Not every musician enjoys teaching but I get great satisfaction from it.

Consultation Lesson
***********************
It is important that you find the right teacher for you, in terms of teaching skills, motivation and personality. Also it is important for me as a teacher to find out what sparks your interest in music, to help plan the best approach to your lessons.

I feel that this is best achieved in a "face to face" meeting which is why I suggest an initial consultation lesson to discuss what motivates you / the student to apply for lessons.

 Students That I Teach
*************************
With regard to the students that I currently teach, my students vary from young children learning to play for the first time to older students who want to experience a level of teaching that I can give from my time studying with an internationally renown professors at the Royal Academy of Music.

Some of my students are studying other subjects whilst they are in London and enjoy the chance of taking up their music studies again at the same time.

Teaching Younger Students
********************************
Although parents may arrange for me to initially teach one of their children, I sometimes find I am asked to teach other members of the family including one of the parents.
Teaching more than one student can be useful if attention spans are short as is teaching piano as well as violin or theory.

Piano Tuition
***************
I also studied the piano and have worked with a number of accomplished pianists so I also teach piano but limit my teaching to Grade 6 as it is not my principal instrument.  Some parents like a consistent method of teaching and prefer both instruments to be taught by the same teacher, if possible, which I can provide.
